Last Saturday, I decided to put my bad Dimond District Oktoberfest from last year behind me and give the festival another try.
As many are aware, last year the festival ran out of beer not even half way into the event. This was after folks slapped down $20 to get a sampling of some of the best local beer around. We pretty much were standing around with empty mugs and no one from the festival was talking refunds. They're lucky folks didn't riot.
I'm not saying Oktoberfest is just beer. Located at the intersection of Fruitvale Avenue and Macarthur Boulevard, the annual festival features a variety of booths from local vendors. The festival is a way to honor and remember the area's strong German history and connect with new neighbors.
And of course, you get to drink beer while walking down the street. Pretty cool. Except last year, the well ran dry. I was not pleased, but I decided to lay my money down again because I did enjoy the community aspect of the festival.
What made me upset this year was the fact that the mugs we got (paying the same as last year) are smaller than the ones from last year. I mean, you can't even fit a regular beer in the Dimond District mugs.
What gives? I'm not a beer fanatic or anything, but if I'm paying the same price as last year when I didn't even get all I was promised, I expect the festival organizers to at the very least try and make up for last year's mistake.
I don't think it's cool and although I plan not to attend next year's event (for real!), I hope the organizers begin thinking of ways to make the beer part of Oktoberfest better.
