Journalism @The School of the Arts

It's been such a joy co-teaching a multi-week journalism workshop at the Oakland School of the Arts, located inside the revamped Art Deco-style Fox Theater on Telegraph Avenue.

As part of our grassroots, food justice education program, Oakland Local is providing social networking communications and journalism to both youth and local non profits, and it's a rewarding experience.

At the OSA, it 's fantastic to see kids practicing their instruments in the middle of the narrow hallways of the school. And the energy, always high at a high school, is at top level. The students can really tap into their creativity and the teachers seem to have leeway to  go beyond test scores.

Our journalism students are working on some really cool stuff that I'll blog about a bit later. But for now, know that these young Oakland writers have a bright future.
